‘Gimee Shelter
A project to design and make a ‘shelter style structure’ outdoors in the Meriden Adventure Playground (MAPA)
MAPA, an organically built and play-led space offering the community a space to play outdoors in a safe way, but without the rigidity ‘playground’ and park spaces have. MAPA, an independent organisation developed from a Local Authority (SMBC) initiative, offers family opportunity to get involved in organic growing, events around the fire pit, mud kitchens, climbing, jumping, exploring and hanging out.
Mustard Arts, an arts organisation delivering an artist commissioning programme in the North of Solihull, are seeking an experienced artist to design and build a shelter to create a space within the playground for the older youth group. Somewhere that they can make their own, but also a safe distance from the park rangers so that they are safe.
We believe that a visual artist would be an interesting professional to lead on this work. Working alongside the play workers and young people. Offering them a contemporary aesthetic to work within and make their own choices around shape, colour and materials. The challenge being, ensuring that the artistic nature of the design and making isn’t diluted by the strong sense of youth involvement.
There will be some restrictions to adhere to, like avoiding any planning permissions and being in check with health and safety. MAPA will support the artist with the risk assessment and be a support all the way through the project.
Methodology: We anticipate that the project will start with some consultation with the youth group at MAPA to gauge ideas and for artist to introduce themselves. After this the project will be artist led and in negotiation with MAPA. Mustard Arts will support the artist in developing the proposed idea/design.
Mustard Arts is looking for an artist with a clear set of aesthetics through their previous work, and have built ‘structures’, that may have been decorative in the public realm or as functional outdoor furniture/playground pieces. Will have worked with youth aged 13-21 comfortably supporting them to voice their ideas and opinions but support them to be inspired by design and art (your practice). Feel confident to work in an outdoor environment, with ‘playwork’ ethos being at the heart of what MAPA does.
